    Bond

    93RP

The 2008 Quella is a dark, brooding wine loaded with super-ripe dark black fruit, smoke, tar and licorice. It is a seriously intense wine that will require bottle age. This is an especially authoritative wine from Bond.

The 2009 Chardonnay 3-D is quite fresh and vibrant. Lime, lemon, minerals and saline notes emerge from this energetic Chardonnay. The wine’s vibrancy follows through nicely to the focused finish.

    Buccella Cuvee Katrina Eileen 2012

Named after our first-born daughter, Cuvée Katrina Eileen is primarily composed of fruit from a vineyard in the Western Hills of Yountville, where yields are miniscule. The extremely rocky soil of the vineyard produces concentrated clusters of perfectly ripened Cabernet Sauvignon. In German, the name “Katrina” represents purity and fittingly, this wine is made entirely from the Cabernet Sauvignon grape, providing a pure expression of this decadent varietal. It also reflects our daughter’s personality with flavors that are complex, unreserved and expressive.

The 2012 Buccella Cuvée Katrina Eileen is a gregarious and immediately charming wine. The aromas are pure Buccella, bursting with blueberry, cassis, boysenberry preserve and notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. On the palate the wine impresses with its intense concentration and smooth core of silky tannin. The long finish delivers blackberry and cassis fruit with hints of caramel, mocha and black tea. This is a wine structured for aging but enjoyable in its youth.

Not surprisingly, the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Lotus Vineyard (308 cases of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that was aged 20 months in new French oak) is a lighter style, but it is a successful effort from this vineyard’s decomposed, rocky, volcanic soils. Well-made with no herbaceousness, it offers pretty blueberry and raspberry flavors intertwined with wet rocks, spring flowers and background oak. Bottled early to preserve its fruit, it should be enjoyed over the next 10+ years.

    Futo Proprietary Red 2006

    95 RP

The 2006 Futo (75% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot) exhibits a deep ruby/blue/purple color, a flawless integration of tannin, acidity, wood, and alcohol, and gorgeous opulence. While Futo is situated on western hillsides overlooking Oakville, it displays a style that has more in common with the purity and elegance found in Screaming Eagle, which is a few miles to the east, on the valley floor. This beautiful 2006 is a resounding success for this vintage, which had some issues with rustic tannins. It should drink well for 15+ years.
